Automotive | Field Quality | Supplier Collaboration | Warranty Analysis

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Quality Engineer (Contractor) to join our team and play a key role in resolving real-world quality issues that impact customers. In this position, you’ll analyze field-returned parts, lead cross-functional task forces, and work directly with suppliers to drive corrective actions and long-term improvements.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of root-cause analysis, supplier management, process improvement, and teamwork—and who enjoys taking ownership from investigation through resolution.

You’ll collaborate across departments including R&D, Quality, After Sales, and Production Plants, and work closely with a global Quality Engineering network in the USA, Germany, and China. You’ll also support supplier cost recovery efforts by negotiating warranty chargebacks based on field failure analysis and acceptance rates.

What You’ll Do

Field Quality & Root Cause Analysis

  • Identify emerging quality issues and detect unjustified warranty claims within one of three commodity areas:
    • Interior/Exterior
    • Electrics/Electronics
    • Powertrain
  • Perform hands-on analysis of warranty return parts, determining root cause and failure mechanisms.
  • Document findings and outcomes in the appropriate quality and warranty IT systems.

Problem Solving & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Lead structured task forces and coordinate corrective action initiatives across:
R&D, Quality, After Sales, Production Plants, and suppliers
  • Drive continuous improvements by identifying weaknesses in existing processes and recommending optimizations.
  • Monitor field warranty data trends and adjust parts routing strategies to ensure efficient handling and accurate reporting.

Supplier Quality & Warranty Cost Recovery

  • Negotiate and execute warranty chargebacks to suppliers based on analyzed failure rates and acceptance criteria.
  • Conduct supplier visits and audits to ensure warranty analysis processes meet VDA standards.

Team & Technical Support

  • Supervise technicians to ensure correct handling of returned parts and timely system processing.
  • Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to engineers and team members as needed.

What You Bring

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality Management, or related field (or equivalent relevant experience)
  • 7+ years of experience in a technical role within the Automotive industry
  • Strong expertise in:
    • Root cause analysis and failure diagnostics
    • Warranty return part evaluation
    • Supplier collaboration and issue resolution
    • Process improvement and optimization methodologies

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Quality Assurance fundamentals, including:
    • Statistical analysis and process capability
    • Precision measurement and quality control systems
  • Understanding of business fundamentals (cost, profitability, operational impact)
  • Automotive engineering knowledge (components, forces, material interactions)
  • Materials science familiarity with common automotive materials
  • Experience working effectively in multicultural/global environments

Additional Details

  • Comfortable working in an international and multicultural environment
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Flexibility in hours/work schedule may be required
  • Domestic and international travel expected
  • German language skills are a plus
