Job Summary
The Non Profit Experienced Tax Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex non‑profit tax issues. The Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption and unrelated business income issues, recognizes, communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy, and makes top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. The Manager is a critical member of the regional Nonprofit Tax team, actively participates in marketing and networking within an area of expertise, maintains client relationships and acts as the primary contact for complex questions.
Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance
- Ensures both that clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and that the firm and client service teams comply with all firm policies, standards and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (“TQM”).
- Conducts review of T/Rs and resolves all tax issues with client; involves specialists where appropriate.
- Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriate.
- Review of ASC 740‑10 (Uncertain Tax Positions) workpapers and disclosure for audited financial statements.
- Plans and reviews the tax process and the procedures to be performed to include:
- Budgeting and staffing.
- Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance of Senior.
- Timely billing including management of identified out‑of‑scope activity and communication to client.
- Timely collection of A/R.
- Manages client relationships/expectations in accordance with the project.
- Provides advice to clients in a timely manner.
- Research
- Identifies when research is needed; frames issues to be researched and reports the analysis concisely.
- Applies most firm and professional standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns.
- Involves firm specialists as appropriate.
- Tax Consulting
- Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes.
- Applies combined tax knowledge and industry knowledge to recommend solutions.
- Develops and implements a work plan to organize STS assistance on ongoing projects from client.
- Frames projects and issues for effective delegation to seniors and associates.
- Serves as a technical resource to peers within the region.
- Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance.
- Ensures client service teams comply with firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (“WTA”).
- Strategy Development
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the firm, or firm personnel, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing nonprofit tax benefits.
- Reviews studies of tax implications and offers alternative courses of action to clients.
- Researches and implements nonprofit tax strategies, including experimentation with promising new strategies and ideas.
- Identifies and leverages lessons learned on prior projects and offers input on how to improve processes and methods.
- Other Duties
- Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.
- Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments.
- Trains associates and seniors on the use of all current software tools.
- Acts as a career adviser to associates and senior associates.
- Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates.
- Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Six (6) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction) or IRS Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or equivalent) required.
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively delegate work as needed.
- Strong analytical, research and critical‑thinking skills and decision‑making skills.
- Capacity to work well in a team environment.
- Capability of developing and managing a team of tax professionals.
- Ability to compose written tax advice.
- Capability of effectively developing and maintaining client relationships.
- Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients.
Salary
Illinois Range: $120,000 - $139,000
Minnesota Range: $100,000 - $130,000
