The Mechanic is a skilled technician responsible for the maintenance, repair, and diagnostics of both passenger vehicles and heavy construction equipment. This role performs routine service work as well as moderately complex mechanical repairs using diagnostic equipment, technical manuals, and repair procedures. Work is performed both in the shop and on-site using a Mobile Service Truck. The position requires technical training and hands-on experience, typically gained through vocational programs or apprenticeships.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Inspect and diagnose mechanical issues in passenger vehicles and heavy construction equipment for proper performance and detection of faults / malfunctions which require repair.
• Perform scheduled and unscheduled repairs, including engines, brakes, hydraulics, suspensions, and electrical systems.
• Utilize diagnostic tools and technical manuals to guide repairs and troubleshooting.
• Document service activities, including work orders, parts used, and inspections.
• Maintain accurate service records for each unit serviced.
• Ensure repairs meet established quality and safety standards.
• Operate and maintain Mobile Service Truck to complete field service requests at job sites and remote locations.
• Clean, lubricate and perform other routine maintenance work on equipment.
• Service attachments and working tools such as blades, ploughs, winches and side booms.
• Assist in any related areas as assigned by Warehouse Manager or Superintendents.
• Follow and enforce safety protocols during all repair and service tasks.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

• Wear appropriate PPE at all times.
• Operate tools, machinery, and diagnostic equipment according to manufacturer specifications and safety guidelines.
• Inspect and maintain tools and equipment regularly to ensure they are in safe working condition.
• Secure vehicles and equipment prior to inspection or repair (e.g., use of jack stands, wheel chocks).
• Follow safe lifting procedures for heavy parts and equipment.
• Maintain clean and organized work areas free of hazards.
• Follow all traffic and environmental safety protocols when working at off-site locations.
• Use appropriate signage or barriers when working in public or shared spaces.
• Properly store, handle, and dispose of fuels, lubricants, batteries, and other hazardous materials in accordance with OSHA and EPA regulations.
• Understand and follow Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all chemicals used.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High School diploma or equivalent. Technical diploma or trade certification in Automotive or Heavy Equipment Technology preferred.
• 25 years of hands-on experience in mechanical repair and diagnostics. Welding experience preferred.
• Valid drivers license and clean driving record required.
• CDL preferred (especially for transporting or operating heavy equipment).
• Strong understanding of mechanical systems, including hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
• Proficient in using diagnostic tools and software.
• Knowledge of engine, brake, suspension, and hydraulic system repair.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
• Skilled in troubleshooting, welding, and basic fabrication.
• Strong documentation skills for service records and work orders.
• Ability to travel frequently between islands with occasional overnight stay.
• Ability to work overtime, holidays and weekends as needed.
