Job Description
Kara provides a compassionate space for those navigating the journey of grief. We are seeking an Assistant Director to provide essential operational and administrative leadership for our Adult Services Program. Based onsite at our Palo Alto office, this role partners with the Adult Services Program Director to ensure that our peer groups, one-on-one support, and volunteer-led initiatives are delivered with compassion, efficiency, and operational excellence.
This position is ideal for a professional who combines strong organizational systems with a deeply empathetic mindset. You will be instrumental in managing current services while helping to expand our support for young adults and other key initiatives. We are looking for a collaborative team member who understands that behind every operational task is a person seeking support, and who can maintain professional, compassionate boundaries while ensuring our services run seamlessly.

Serving the San Francisco Bay Area since 1976, Kara provides comprehensive bereavement support, grief education, and crisis response to individuals and communities facing the difficult realities of death and dying. Serving more than 6,000 individuals in 2025, Kara provides a wide breadth of grief support and education services to the community including: individual and group peer support; in- house psychotherapy; on-site crisis intervention; grief education and training services; Camp Kara, a bereavement camp for children 6-17 years old; and community events.
Through a time-tested and highly effective peer support model (adopted from the Shanti Model), over 200 Kara volunteers, supervised by a high quality staff, help grieving adults and children understand what they are experiencing and to cope in healthy ways. Kara provides a space where those in grief find deep relief in the company of others who understand. Our services are designed to be accessible, and we are funded primarily by charitable donations and the heartfelt generosity of the community we serve.
