Job Description Job Description The City of Oakland, Illinois (population 739), located in east-central Illinois, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Chief of Police. The Oakland Police Department is staffed will be staffed by a full-Time Chief and three part-time officers. The Chief is appointed by and reports to the mayor and police committee. The ideal candidate will demonstrate integrity, strong leadership, and comprehensive knowledge of modern law enforcement administration. This individual will be an effective communicator, skilled in building collaborative relationships with public safety partners, city departments, the business community, and residents. The Chief will serve as the visible and trusted leader of the Department, combining confident decision-making with a collaborative leadership style. Key responsibilities include overseeing all department operations and personnel, managing budgeting and administrative functions, preparing monthly reports for the Mayor and City Council, analyzing crime trends, participating in patrols and ensuring effective patrol operations and resource deployment, and representing the City in local, regional, and state partnerships. Minimum Qualifications: 1. Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or related field. (Masters preferred) 2. Minimum 10 years of progressive law enforcement experience, including at least 5 years in senior leadership. 3. Completion of a senior law enforcement leadership program ( or equivalent) 4. Strong Knowledge of law enforcement best practices, budgeting, and personnel management. Salary range: $65,000-70,000 plus benefits. Residency within 30 miles of City Hall is required within 6 months of hire. Work Hours for this position may fluctuate based on operational needs, emergencies, and departmental priorities. This role requires flexibility, as shifts may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours when necessary to ensure quality service and effective response to community needs.
