Department Overview

The coworkers of Electric Operations ensure the delivery of clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to nearly 16 million people in Northern and Central California. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E's electric distribution and transmission operations and maintenance, as well as Power Generation operations. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The Team manages over 100,000 circuit miles of electric distribution lines and over 18,000 circuit miles of interconnected transmission lines, and operates and maintains PG&E's hydroelectric, fossil, solar generation and battery storage facilities, providing approximately 5,300 megawatts of generating capacity for customers. Electric Operations is comprised of approximately 6,500 coworkers.

A critical part of Electric Operations is the integrity and management of our assets through the lens of corrosion control. The Corrosion Control Programs group ensures the safety and reliability of steel transmission assets through programs such as: Tower Coatings, Cathodic Protection, Arc Fault and Tower Replacement—employing industry standard practices as well as implementing industry leading initiatives.

Position Summary

The Corrosion Engineer, Career is responsible for providing engineering support to programs maintaining and operating PG&E's electric transmission system. Engineering support can include, but is not limited to, overseeing the investigation and remediation of atmospheric corrosion, underground corrosion, corrosion of concrete steel reinforcement, and direct and alternating current interference. This position identifies and designs corrosion mitigation systems and other capital investments related to electric transmission corrosion prevention and monitoring. It also creates and maintains company standards and procedures related to corrosion control and solves technical problems related to corrosion prevention. This position works closely with other engineers, field construction, project management and provides subject matter expertise and consultation to the larger electric organization. Position contributes toward safety excellence goals by improving safety, reliability and affordability for PG&E's steel transmission infrastructure.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

A reasonable salary range is:

Minimum Base Salary (Bay Area)  $122,000.00Mid Base Salary (Bay Area)  $158,000.00

Maximum Base Salary (Bay Area)  $194,000.00

Minimum Base Salary (California)  $116,000.00Mid Base Salary (California)  $150,000.00Maximum Base Salary (California)  $184,000.00

Responsibilities

  • Acts as engineering lead in the execution of one or more corrosion control programs
  • Supports the development and communication of new corrosion control standards and procedures
  • Supports the analysis of large datasets pertinent to complex corrosion control problems, with respect to mitigation scope, economic value, and long-range planning
  • Develops multi-year workplans and corrosion control mitigation designs for complex or large-scale projects
  • Works effectively in a team environment as well as autonomously 
  • Prepares and reviews field investigation data and engineering studies in order to support departments decision-making process
  • Supports field work related to investigations, engineering designs, and construction
  • Reviews daily field inspection reports to confirm appropriate corrosion work practices are performed
  • Supports field investigation and construction crews with engineering decisions
  • Supports evaluation and application of new technology in order to optimize affordability and streamline maintenance requirements
  • May be assigned a geographic territory to oversee all corrosion related aspects of the steel infrastructure
  • Participates in industry related events such as Association of Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) conferences and committees

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 3 years of experience in a corrosion, science, or utility related field

Desired:

  • AMPP CP2-Cathodic Protection Technician certification
  • AMPP Certified Coatings Inspector Program 1 (CIP 1) or higher
  • Corrosion work experience related to natural gas or electric utilities
  • Cathodic protection design, construction, and troubleshooting experience
  • Tower construction and maintenance experience
  • Pipeline or Tower Coatings selection and application experience
  • Project management experience      
  • Knowledge of coating behaviors, metallurgy, and corrosion degradation modes
  • Knowledge of corrosion principles and application of corrosion controls
  • Understanding of hazards working in energized environments
  • Knowledge with electric transmission lead based and non-lead based coating selection, surface preparation, and application procedures
  • Ability to work in SAP, TLM, ET-GIS, Excel, Word, Outlook
  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local regulations and laws - for example FERC, NERC, CAISO, CPUC - as needed to perform at the job level
  • Knowledge of electric transmission and distribution systems concepts, methods, best practices, techniques, and regulatory requirements as needed to perform at the job level
  • Competency in relating openly and comfortably with diverse groups of people
  • Competency in building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives
  • Competency in developing and delivering multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences
