As a director of environmental health and safety (EHS), you will develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive EHS programs, policies, and procedures across all university locations. You will lead risk assessments and hazard analyses to identify potential issues and apply appropriate mitigation strategies. Responsibilities include oversight of incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action planning. Among other duties, you will work with executive leadership to incorporate EHS priorities into organizational strategy, track and report EHS performance metrics, trends, and KPIs to leadership, and efficiently manage EHS staff and budgets.

In this role, you will deliver training and development programs to educate students, staff, and faculty about safety and environmental responsibilities. You will act as the main contact for regulatory agencies to handle audits, inspections, and reporting requirements. Additionally, you will foster a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement. You will also ensure adherence to OSHA, EPA, NFP, IBC, and other relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations, consistently following these standards.

The EHS Director upholds SCAD's core values to promote safety and creativity. They foster a safe working and living environment by implementing safety initiatives, reporting and correcting unsafe conditions and behaviors, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This role is essential during emergency response activities.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong understanding of environmental compliance. They demonstrate excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills. The candidate can also build relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum qualifications:  

  • At least eight years of progressive EHS experience with at least three years in a leadership role
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of all applicable state, federal, and local laws and regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, LifeSafety, NFP, and IBC)

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Experience in manufacturing, industrial, public safety, or construction environments

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:

  • Valid driver's license

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
