Job Description

UPMC Hamot is seeking a Professional Staff Nurse to join the Labor & Delivery team!

Schedule Requirements:

  • Day and night availability required
  • Rotating shifts required
  • On‑call participation required
Position Purpose

The Professional Staff Nurse (RN) is a key member of the care delivery team and is responsible for setting standards for the level and quality of patient care. This role carries responsibility, authority, and accountability for nursing care delivery.

The Professional Staff Nurse manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the use of independent judgment, effective communication, and collaboration with interdisciplinary team members. This role encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration, and supervision, while establishing and maintaining strong relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve desired outcomes across the continuum of care. The Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates a commitment to the community and the nursing profession.

Key ResponsibilitiesProfessional Practice & Collaboration
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships by demonstrating accountability, motivation, enthusiasm, and commitment to patients and colleagues.
  • Demonstrates understanding of cultural differences and promotes healthy, respectful workplace relationships.

  • Identifies and communicates workplace safety hazards to peers and leadership.
Patient, Family & Staff Education
  • Applies adult learning principles (and/or pediatric principles when applicable) to educate patients, families, students, and new staff.
  • Provides thorough, patient‑centered education to support the episode of care and transitions to other care settings or home.
  • Supports the professional development of students and colleagues and may serve as a preceptor.
  • Creates an environment of open dialogue, inquiry, and continuous improvement by seeking feedback and refining practice.
Patient‑Centered Care & Clinical Excellence
  • Applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship‑Based Care to foster a healing environment.
  • Develops daily goals and individualized plans of care in partnership with patients, addressing clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual needs.
  • Demonstrates strong critical thinking and nursing judgment throughout the episode of care.
  • Communicates patient status clearly to care team members and advocates for appropriate changes in care and unit practices.
  • Maintains comprehensive, accurate documentation that promotes continuity and collaboration among caregivers.
  • Incorporates national professional standards and health system goals to improve patient safety, quality, and experience.
  • Builds caring, compassionate relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
Professional Development & Shared Governance
  • Demonstrates accountability for ongoing professional development to enhance nursing practice and patient outcomes.
  • Actively participates in unit‑based shared governance, goal setting, and quality initiatives.
  • Serves as an engaged and collaborative care team member, offering assistance and partnership when needed.
  • Adapts to change with flexibility and supports transitions that improve care delivery and the practice environment.
Quality Improvement & Evidence‑Based Practice
  • Actively participates in unit‑ or department‑specific quality improvement initiatives.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement and communicates them to colleagues and leadership.
  • Takes responsibility for improving patient satisfaction and service excellence.
  • Utilizes research and evidence‑based practice to support clinical improvements, including identification of relevant research, participation in multidisciplinary discussions, and influencing patient plans of care.

Minimum 4 years experience.

BSN required.

Annual completion of a professional contribution selected from department, hospital or system gals, and approved by Unit Director AND either:UPMC approved nursing certification required within 1 year of hire/transfer and must be maintained.

- Certification not required if Master's in nursing or DNP is held. 

- If a BSN is held, a Master's degree in a related field may be substituted in lieu of Certification.

Must maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performance evaluation to maintain status.

Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families. 

Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. 

Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process. Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Additional License RequirementsAnnual completion of a professional contribution selected from department, hospital or system gals, and approved by Unit Director AND either:UPMC approved nursing certification required within 1 year of hire/transfer and must be maintained.Certification not required if Master's in nursing or DNP is held.If a BSN is held, a Master's degree in a related field may be substituted in lieu of Certification.CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.
 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
