Your Role on the Team

Must be able to work nights.

The Physician Assistant in the Department of Surgery will manage and coordinate patient care in the Trauma ICU (TICU), Surgical ICU (SICU), and/or Burn ICU (BICU). Duties include assessing health needs, planning and evaluating care for general surgery patients, participating in shift sign‑outs, following up with surgical teams, and conducting trauma resuscitations and surgical consultations. The PA will schedule and oversee procedures, manage critical lab results, perform physical examinations, and ensure timely documentation and discharge planning.

The PA demonstrates advanced medical knowledge, clinical competence, sound judgment, and strong communication skills. Under supervision of the Medical Director of Surgical Critical Care, the PA provides multidisciplinary care coordination and contributes to professional development and competency validation.

What It Takes to be Successful Required
  • Current, active, and unrestricted licensed Physician Assistant in California.
  • Current DEA number.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
  • ATLS certification within six months of hire.
  • Practice agreements completed and on file.
  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional privileges prior to hire.
  • Completion of HIPAA and other required trainings (e.g., TB screening, JCAHO requirements).
  • Essential clinical skills and the ability to perform assigned duties competently.
  • Customer service skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships across the UCI Health System.
  • Diplomacy, flexibility, and clear communication with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including the preparation of clear medical reports and progress notes.
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate work pace and to be trained in specialized medical equipment and procedures.
Preferred
  • Experience in surgical services such as scrubbing, draping, retracting, and suturing.
  • Proficiency with Windows and MS Office software (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
  • Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
