Howard University Hospital seeks to hire a Pharmacy and Automation Supervisor in the Pharmacy department, who will embrace our rich and historic tradition of excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and oversight of Sterile Compounding operations, ensuring compliance with USP 797 and other USP standards, as well as State Board of Pharmacy, The Joint Commission, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Evaluate and troubleshoot pharmacy-related automation equipment needs and maintenance. Works with both internal and external vendors in order to resolve automation equipment failures.
  • Maintain daily logs and documentation pertaining to the position daily tasks per departmental policy.
  • Provide training for IV room personnel under the direction of departmental leadership.
  • Monitors activities of all controlled substances; documents, follows up and alerts Manager on all discrepancies.
  • Manages and troubleshoots all Pyxis stations to include security and communication of system changes.
  • Maintains and optimizes inventory in all Pyxis stations.
  • Coordinates and maintains an accurate inventory of all controlled substances.
  • Produces Pyxis and Prepack compare reports; reviews and follows up on all defined reports associated with Pyxis and the CII safe; maintains storage records; Additional duties as assigned.
  • Serves as a resource for workflow and technical questions for end-users with regards to all systems involved in the automated dispensing process.
  • Responsible for training staff on proper troubleshoot and reporting of issues for each technology system.
  • Works with pharmacy management to evaluate opportunities to improve pharmacy technology, new automation, upgrades, etc.
  • Tests and implements new systems as directed, as well as developing training documents for staff outlining new processes.
  • Provides on-site software and workflow support to end-users during implementation. Works one-on-one with staff to provide guidance as needed post-implementation to assist in meeting proficiency requirements.
  • Participates in software upgrades, enhancements, and bug fixes.
  • Oversees user access control and assists the IT Service Center to resolve problems.
  • Participates in development and maintenance of contingency and downtime plans for technology systems failure or compromise.
  • Oversees daily workflow to ensure compliance with regulatory standards (USP <797>, USP <800>, Joint Commission and departmental policies).
  • Provides direct supervision, guidance, and performance feedback to assigned pharmacy technicians and support staff involved in sterile compounding, automation, and Pyxis operations.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelor of Science, Arts, or Associate degree in a healthcare related field preferred.
  • Graduation from an Accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program also preferred.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a hospital setting, with automated distribution systems, decentralized pharmacy services, and sterile compounding. Working knowledge of USP 795, 797, and 800. Preferred: Specific advanced experience in Sterile Compounding and familiar with the requirements of USP 797 and USP 800. Previous experience with Cerner, Pyxis, Pharmogistics, Carousel technology and IV Preparation software highly desired.
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the District of Columbia Board of Pharmacy.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
  • PTCB Certificate in Sterile Compounding at time of hire or must meet one of the three competencies to fulfil the role of Designated Person for Sterile Compounding for HUH.

Position Details

  • Job Type/FTE: 1.0 (Fulltime)
  • Shift: Day Shift (M – F 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM)

  • Pay Range: $23.41 - $37.46
    • Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
