The executive team of the Probation Department is seeking to establish an eligible list with qualified leaders within the department who are committed to exemplifying and enhancing the core values of the department in the role of Deputy Chief Probation Officer. The Deputy Chief Probation Officer position is the third-highest-ranking executive-level position in the department, with responsibility for planning, organizing, directing, and reviewing the activities of one or more of the major divisions of the department, including Administrative Services, Juvenile Services, Adult and Pre-Trial Services, and Institutions Divisions. The Deputy Chief Probation Officer also provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Assistant Chief Probation Officer and/or the Chief Probation Officer, and acts as the Assistant Chief Probation Officer and/or the Chief Probation Officer in his/her absence. The ideal candidate will be:Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
Experience: Five years of increasingly responsible experience performing a wide variety of duties related to probation management, including one year in a senior-level administrative or management position.
Knowledge of:Departmental Promotional Only. Only current County of San Mateo employees in the San Mateo County Probation Department with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, or extra-help/limited term position prior to the final filing date may apply.
A supplemental application form must be submitted in addition to the standard County employment application. A resume will not be accepted as a substitute for the required employment application and supplemental questionnaire. The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%), which may include a pre-interview written exercise and oral presentation. Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations, or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California, and applicants must participate at their own expense.
