Ability Culinary brings refined, performance-focused cooking to elite athletes across the NBA, NHL, and WNBA through a multi-location culinary system.

We run the kitchen at Capital One Arena for the Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals — pregame and postgame team service, plus a range of hospitality programs serving athletic staff and executives. Our headquarters kitchen supports the arena with detailed mise and also produces for professional practice facilities, charter flights, and private clients.

Driven by a commitment to ingredient purity and physiological benefit, we uphold the highest standards for product integrity. We source wholesome, non-toxic ingredients, emphasizing organic, non-GMO, and sustainable selections. Our mission is to craft extraordinary food that fuels peak human performance, blending classic and modern culinary techniques with Michelin-level precision to celebrate pure flavors, never relying on artificial enhancements.

The role

Join our hospitality team working the arena's premium spaces — owners' areas, executive suites, and private lounges. You'll work under the Hospitality Supervisor and directly alongside the chefs who made the food, running the room from setup through breakdown.

This is not a traditional server position. There is no section, no POS, no tip pool. On a given night you'll set the dining room, run food, refill and restock, clear plates, reset the lounge, and wash dishes — and you'll do all of it in rooms where the guests are often being watched by everyone else in the building. The service has to disappear: plates arrive before they're asked for, glasses never sit empty, nobody has to look for you.

So we're looking for two things at once, and we're aware they don't always come in the same person. You're comfortable in front of people — warm, composed, able to hold a conversation with a guest who may be very well known and treat it as unremarkable. And you're not precious about the work. The best people we've had in these rooms are the ones who set the table, then carried the Cambro, then went back and wiped the counter, without anyone asking and without making a point of it.

We are a small team and everyone here does a lot of everything, including leadership. There is no version of this job that is only the elegant part, and the people who are happiest here wouldn't want one.
Pay

$25–27 per hour, flat. This is not a tipped position and your pay doesn't depend on the room. You'll know what you're making before you walk in.

Schedule

Shifts vary. Our calendar is set by the NBA and NHL home schedules, so hours move week to week: you'll typically report well before doors and work through breakdown after the final guest leaves. We publish schedules as far ahead as the game calendar allows.

Nights, weekends, and holidays are part of the job, including through the December and January stretch, which can be our busiest. Some nights are a quiet twelve-top; some nights the building is full and you're moving the whole time.

Our volume follows the professional sports calendar. The arena season runs October through April and is our heaviest stretch; spring and summer shift toward baseball charters, corporate catering, and commissary production.

Start date: We're targeting mid-September, ahead of the arena season. Timing is flexible for the right candidate. Share your availability when you apply. Note that arena credentialing includes a background check, so applying early helps.

What you'll do

  • Set dining rooms, lounge spaces, and suites — linen, glassware, service ware, buffet or plated setup — and check the room the way you'd want it checked if you were the guest
  • Take the menu brief from the culinary team before doors: what's on, what's 86'd, what's in every dish
  • Run food and work the room by reading it, not hovering in it — anticipate rather than ask
  • Time food drops and clearing with the kitchen so service flow never interrupts the guest experience
  • Refill, replenish, and restock throughout the event; hold the visual presentation of the room from first guest to last
  • Clear plates, bus tables, and wash dishes as service requires
  • Answer guest questions on food and beverage confidently, and be exact about allergens and dietary restrictions
  • Help move serviceware and equipment safely between the arena, HQ, and off-site events
  • Break down clean, restock, and reset the space for the next service

What we're looking for

  • At least a year of hospitality experience in any capacity — host, busser, food runner, barback, banquet, or server. We care more about how you carry yourself in a room than about which title you held
  • Genuinely comfortable being client-facing, and equally willing to get your hands dirty
  • Precision on allergens and dietary specs. We feed athletes with real restrictions and the margin for error is zero
  • Discretion. You'll be around professional athletes, their families, and team ownership. What happens in the building stays in the building — no photos, no social, no repeating what you hear
  • Professional presentation, and a demeanor that stays calm and warm when the room goes sideways
  • Reliable transportation and flexibility to report to either DC location; a valid driver's license is a plus
  • Able to pass a background check for arena credentialing
  • Able to stand and move for long shifts and lift up to 40 lb

Nice to have: experience in suites, club level, or premium sports hospitality; fine dining or luxury banquet background; wine or beverage service; banquet captain or lead experience; Food Handler certification.

What we'll teach you

You'll be trained on our service standards, our menus, and the specific rhythm of a room where the guests are being watched. Wine and beverage service is part of that training. We would rather hire someone with real hospitality instincts and teach them our building than hire someone who already knows a different building's way of doing things.

Why work here

  • Predictable money: a flat hourly rate that doesn't swing with the room
  • Real hospitality: rooms most people in the building never see, food made by the chefs standing next to you
  • You'll see the full range of the business high-touch suite service one night, large-format catering the next
  • A team small enough that your work is visible and your growth isn't theoretical
